Summer Kits VS Winter Kits

Posted by Silver Ridge Rabbitry on January 21, 2010 at 7:06 PM

I have noticed that summer kits and winter kits are different in the way they grow and develop, below are some photos, the winter kit has a thicker coat, and noticeably shorter ears, and a shorter body. The summer kit (not really summer just raised in my basement at a constant 70 degrees.) has much longer ears and and a longer body and better fur quality. Please feel free to comment on why these rabbits from the same genetics (the mothers were sisters) are different

No, but their mothers were half sisters.

I passed this on to another better qualified than I,,but if it were me,I'd put the inside doe outside and the outside doe inside, and repeat the mating, but to be honest if just sounds like genetics to me,,with it being only a half sister, and a non related buck, but again I'm no expert....
Keep us posted,if you reverse this mating this year, for this is very curious,,too me atleast..........

Could it possibly be due to the temp differences? The longer ear will help the hotter climate rabbit regulate body heat, where the shorter ear will not lose as much body heat. Just a thought. I am in SE Ga and have never seen a short ear NZ.

New Rabbitry Set-up!!!

Silver Ridge Rabbitry is pleased to announce that we have changed our set-up. Previously we were raising out of our garage. That was not an ideal situation, now we are cooking, we have stacking cages from our manufacturer, in a milk house adapted from my father's cow barn, generations of farmers, now in my family. My new set-up is stacking cages with trays. It is so organized and neat, and I hope to keep it that way. I can not say enough about setting it (the rabbitry) up once and doing it right the first time. I just sold off my used cages, that didn't fit into the rabbitry, now I have new and wonderful challenges with my rabbitry. I can not stress how much you want to think about your set-up (cages feeders watering systems, etc.) As much as you want to find the best stock to begin with. If you begin with great stock and a great set-up you can deal with minimal or plenty of space, a barn with poop falling, or stacking trays in basement or a garage or shed. Rabbits are a commitment, so start with the best stock and supplies. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in seeing our set-up.
