Litters in winter

Posted by Silver Ridge Rabbitry on December 12, 2009 at 7:26 PM

This is not easy, raising litters in the winter. I have had 5 litters, 4 of them today. I have not perfected the timing. It has been so cold. It was so cute to see my husband warming babies today. I was at work and one of the does had the young on the wire, my husband bless his heart, not being the animal person I am, put them into the nestbox, and brought them in.  We used some Angora fur from when my mother raised them and covered the babies, and it worked it brought them back to life. 4 of the litters remain outside, I brought the mother that had them on the wire inside, to see if she will care for them, I hope. I will keep you posted on how they do.

See photos:

This is my biggest and best meat doe, her mother had 9 her first litter and 12 her second, and so has she. So this shows the consistancy that I hope to gain with all my does.

These are some of my Hybred does, I call them hybred because I bred a Show buck with a meat doe.

She did well she had 6

Her sister (below) had 7

The other sister had a litter as well

I am trying new nestboxes, to see if I like the metal ones, so far so great!!

Sue,
Looks like you have your work cut out for you. Dave and I lost 4 litters back the beginning of Dec.. Very discouraging. I think because we had moved them into a new barn they were not settled in yet. NO body likes change including the rabbits. Now we have been trying to rebeed and having a difficult time. I did get one bred the other week. Keeping my fingers crossed. I always felt metal boxes were to cold in the winter. Let us know how they work out. Thanks! Great web site!

New Rabbitry Set-up!!!

Silver Ridge Rabbitry is pleased to announce that we have changed our set-up. Previously we were raising out of our garage. That was not an ideal situation, now we are cooking, we have stacking cages from our manufacturer, in a milk house adapted from my father's cow barn, generations of farmers, now in my family. My new set-up is stacking cages with trays. It is so organized and neat, and I hope to keep it that way. I can not say enough about setting it (the rabbitry) up once and doing it right the first time. I just sold off my used cages, that didn't fit into the rabbitry, now I have new and wonderful challenges with my rabbitry. I can not stress how much you want to think about your set-up (cages feeders watering systems, etc.) As much as you want to find the best stock to begin with. If you begin with great stock and a great set-up you can deal with minimal or plenty of space, a barn with poop falling, or stacking trays in basement or a garage or shed. Rabbits are a commitment, so start with the best stock and supplies. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in seeing our set-up.
