I am pro raising of your own meat. I grew up on a beef farm where we also raised our own pigs and chickens. I miss knowing where my food came from and am trying to get back into that with the purchase of my own little farm in NY. Chickens and goats are already in the works. I have thought about and still would eventually like to get into rabbits. I have a freind who raised and bred rabbits for show so she is a good resource but I am a little concerned about the butchering part as I have never done rabbits before. Do you know of a good place to learn such a thing properly or do you offer such a training service? I know with rabbits you really want to do it right the first time....thank you.

Adrianne,
I grew up on a sheep farm as well, and we raised sheep for wool and to feed the guests at our Inn. A lot of my info on butchering rabbits I got from U-tube on the internet, I found that to be a great resourse. We have tried different methods such as a rod and a pellet gun, there is also something on the internet called the "rabbit wringer", no idea how this works. Its never fun, but we are all seeking the most humane way, and wish it to be quick. Also look for great articles, in books. Someone in your area through Craigslist, etc might be able to come and show you how, for your first time, you can make great connections, through the inernet. Any questions feel free to call me.

Has been a number of years since I have bred rabbits for our own use (meat). With the economy as it is and the commercial food supplies so poisoned we are back to raising our own fruits and vegetables, chickens and rabbits. Beyond that we will want to know personally the person who is soing the raising and know first hand how!!!

Yes, after watching Food Inc. recently, I know I respect my animals and treat them well, unlike a lot of the ways animals are treated in food system we currently have.

New Rabbitry Set-up!!!

Silver Ridge Rabbitry is pleased to announce that we have changed our set-up. Previously we were raising out of our garage. That was not an ideal situation, now we are cooking, we have stacking cages from our manufacturer, in a milk house adapted from my father's cow barn, generations of farmers, now in my family. My new set-up is stacking cages with trays. It is so organized and neat, and I hope to keep it that way. I can not say enough about setting it (the rabbitry) up once and doing it right the first time. I just sold off my used cages, that didn't fit into the rabbitry, now I have new and wonderful challenges with my rabbitry. I can not stress how much you want to think about your set-up (cages feeders watering systems, etc.) As much as you want to find the best stock to begin with. If you begin with great stock and a great set-up you can deal with minimal or plenty of space, a barn with poop falling, or stacking trays in basement or a garage or shed. Rabbits are a commitment, so start with the best stock and supplies. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in seeing our set-up.
